Ibtihaj Muhammad and Mariel Zagunis eliminated without medals in fencingBy Shalise Manza Young Yahoo Sports August 8, 2016sports.yahoo.com/news/american-fencers-zagunis-and-muhammad-eliminated-from-womens-tournament-154543731.html?nhp=1In a matter of minutes, the United States fencing team went from having two women in round of 16 in the women’s individual sabre to having none. Mariel Zagunis, the 31-year old Oregon native who won the event in both 2004 and 2008, was eliminated by Russia’s Yekaterina Dyachenko, 15-12. Zagunis was looking to rebound after finishing fourth at the London Olympics and was considered a medal favorite in Rio. The other American to lose was Ibtihaj Muhammad, who made a bit of history earlier Monday when she became the first U.S. athlete to compete at the Olympics wearing a hijab. Muhammad, a 30-year old New Jersey native, won her Round of 32 match against Ukraine’s Olena Kravatska, and held a 6-2 lead in her Round of 16 match against Cecilia Berder of France before Berder came back to win 15-13. Zagunis, Muhammad and Dagmara Wozniak will be back in competition again on Saturday in the team event.
