As I often do, I have set up some polls on the Gulf Coast forum so those interested can see how accurately they can predict who will win different events at this weekend's Rose Condon Memorial. It is all just in fun. You have to be a registered member to actually "vote" in the polls, but you do not have to be a member just to read and post replies. Rose Condon Memorial

Just saw this article on the Rose Condon in the Shreveport Times:Rose Condon fencing event reaches new heightsBy Scott Ferrell The Shreveport Times February 1, 2007 www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070201/SPORTS/302010006/1001/SPORTS When the Rose Condon Memorial Fencing Tournament begins on Saturday, it will reach a new height in its seventh year. The event is expecting its largest participation (almost 200 athletes), its highest level of competition, and some of the top referees in fencing. "This tournament is becoming known nationally and people love to come to this tournament because it's well run and we're good to our people," tournament spokeswoman Sharon Settlemire said. "And we're good to our referees. We really try to make this a top-notch tournament." The two-day event begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday at the Bossier Civic Center. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Rose Condon Scholarship Fund. The 2007 tournament figures to be its best in quality. "We have quite a few 'A' fencers, which is the highest ranking you can get," Sharon Settlemire said. "We have people coming from Atlanta, New York, all over really." Among those participating are Shreveport natives Michael Aufrichtig and Kristi Post Beavis. Aufrichtig is a Caddo Magnet graduate who went on to fence at New York University. He is an A-rated fencer who currently fences for the New York Athletic Club. Beavis is also a Caddo Magnet graduate. She fences with the Atlanta Fencers Club. Also participating in the event is Matt Zich of New York. He is one of the top-rated men's sabre fencers nationally. Locally, Evelyn Scarborough is an A-rated fencer. Besides having those fencers, the tournament figures to be strong in several categories. "I think the men's epee, really and truly, the men's events, are over the top," Settlemire said. "There are so many 'A' competitors. The foil, the sabre and the epee are going to be highly competitive as will the women's epee event. "When fencers come in and they have an 'A', they've been at the national level and have done very well. I'm looking for very strong events in every event we're having." The event also includes some of the nation's best referees. Sharon Everson and Mary Frye are nationally rated. Jerry Benson is a member of the USFA referee delegation.
